River Landing

About River Landing

Vision

Saskatoon has one of the highest quality of life ratings in the country...and a river runs through it. In survey after survey, Saskatoon residents have rated the beautiful South Saskatchewan River as their most treasured civic asset, and for good reason. The water that flows through the Meewasin Valley brings life to the city in the form of potable water, recreation, and a bounty of wildlife - not to mention the scenery which is nothing short of spectacular.

As all prairie people  have a shared connection to the land, the residents of Saskatoon have enjoyed a bond with their river. There is a demonstrated community desire, and a clear opportunity to transform south downtown into an urban riverfront which is vital, animated, safe, and economically viable - a site which engages community pride and excites visitors - a site which integrates with the ecological fabric of downtown and the river valley. This desire has manifested in the River Landing redevelopment project – guaranteeing river access for everyone while recognizing the economic activity and job creation that sustainable business brings to the community.

The developmentof River Landing presents an exciting social, cultural and commercial focus in one of Canada’s fastest growing communities - a showcase and lasting legacy for the citizens of Saskatoon, the people of Saskatchewan, and proud Canadians.

Phase 2

The River Landing Phase II redevelopment project is designed to enhance the sustainability of downtown by reclaiming and developing the A.L. Cole "brownfield" and surrounding area - literally the front yard of Saskatoon’s downtown and one of the main entries to core neighbourhoods that require extensive revitalization. In December of 2004, the Federal Government, Provincial Government and the City of Saskatoon held a joint announcement and committed nearly $30 million in capital funding to reclaim the riverfront. The redevelopment will take at least four years to complete and will include:

  1. the clean-up of contamination on the former A.L. Cole power site to residential standards;
  2. the clean-up, design and development of the riverfront including a new boat launch, the construction of public spaces, and new linkages to the River Landing Phase I site and other related amenities;
  3. the installation of underground services, parking, and roadways to provide proper access to the site;
  4. the construction of a park, with appropriate sound attenuation, including berming to mask an unsightly and loud electrical transformer site;
  5. the reclamation and conversion of an old electrical building into a farmers’ market, business centre (incubator), and village square;
  6. the removal of the unsightly, unused 19th Street overpass, and the streetscaping of all the entry ways to the site; and,
  7. the development of a licensed restaurant and new residential opportunities including an innovative live-work complex.

This $30 million reclamation project was made possible through generous funding by the Federal and Provincial Governments. The new public facilities proposed for River Landing Phase II will greatly enhance local participation and usage and bring all Saskatoon citizens to the site year-round.
